RS-232 Micro Interface

RS-232 is simple, universal, well understood and supported. RS-232 is famous and frequently considered as a serial data communication regulator. Although, not so that far, RS-232 can really helpful when you communicate between Standard MODEM and purposed device e.g. microcontroller (equipped with UART & serial ports).

RS-232 Standard had decided by "Electronic Industry Association" and "Telecommunication Industry Association" in 1962, and known as EIA/TIA-232 Interface Between Data Terminal Equipment and Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment Employing Serial Binary Data Interchange. It is a "creepy" name, don't you think??:-P..This standard is about data communication between computer (Data Terminal Equipment-DTE) and supplement devices (Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment-DCE).

There are 3 main points which RS-232 standard regulated:

I will not talk too much about RS-232 itself. But  I will tell about the hardware/ RS-232 interface. With this interface you may send TTL data to DTE e.g. computer and receive data from DTE. Many of RS-232 level converter IC. One of them is ICL232 from Harris Semiconductor. The pin configuration similar with MAX232 from MAXIM, so you can replace ICL232 with MAX232.

The ICL232 is a dual RS-232 transmitter/receiver interface circuit that meets all ElA RS-232C specifications. It requires a single +5V power supply, and features two onboard charge pump voltage converters which generate +10V and -10V supplies from the 5V supply. The drivers feature true TTL/CMOS input compatibility, slew-rate limited output, and 300W power-off source impedance. The receivers can handle up to +30V, and have a 3kW to 7kW input impedance. The receivers also have hysteresis to improve noise rejection.

This device just use ICL232 standard test schematic. You can see it from ICL232 datasheets.
